Indonesia
I studied Javanese gamelan in Indonesia during various stays between 2006 and 2012. I learned to perform on various instruments and focused on sindhenan (the female singing part). My involvement with gamelan is described in greater detail here.
- Gunungan (July 2006)
-
In the shadow thater (wayang kulit), the gunungan is placed at the centre of the screen before the play begins. During the performance, it is the backdrop which delineates time and space.
- Wayang Kulit in Paris (November 2008)
-
Shadow theater at the Cité de la Musique. The puppeteer (dalang) Sri Joko Raharjo was accompanied by the Javanese gamelan groups Nggiri Kawasta (Surakarta) and Sekar Wangi (Cité de la musique). To see a video of this event, click here.
- Pendopo (September 2012)
-
Mangkunegaran palace in Surakarta. A pendopo is a large space with a roof and no walls. In palaces, it often hosts a gamelan.
